TTHE PERHAPS PARADOX

Culled from the SUN STAND STILL Devotional by Steven Furtick

1Samuel 14:1-14

In today’’s reading the army of King Saul has been locked in a standoff against the Philistines. And Jonathan, the king’’s son, has become so aggravated with the inaction of his fellow warriors that he decides to make a bold move. He enlists his armor bearer to join him on a two-man commando raid.

His battle plan is potentially God inspired— – and a little ludicrous. The two young men will openly approach the enemy outpost. If they get a go-ahead sign from God, they will attack. A borderline suicide mission. But if God is with them, Jonathan figures, nothing can stop them.

In his motivational speech to his bodyguard, Jonathan seems to be speaking out of both sides of his mouth: •

– Nothing can hinder the Lord.

– Perhaps the Lord will act.

At first glance this seems like spiritual schizophrenia.

But perhaps Jonathan isn’’t schizophrenic. Perhaps true faith always feels this way. On the one hand, I know that God is able to do anything. On the other hand, I think He’’s willing to do this specific thing. I know God can. And I’’m pretty sure He will. But I can’’t be completely sure.

That’’s where audacious faith comes in.

Audacity isn’’t the absence of uncertainty and ambiguity. Audacity is believing that God’s promise is bigger than my perhaps.

The Bible says that God’’s Word is a lamp unto our feet (Psalm 119:105), not a floodlight beaming to our destination. So, armed with the confidence that there’’s a decent chance and an interesting possibility that my impulse might be from God (perhaps, in other words), I start investigating.

We’’d all like to live in a world where God lets us do big things that require minimal risk. Where the voice of the Holy Spirit carries for miles and miles, piercing through static and fuzz, jeers and taunts. The fact is, though, that the land where the sun stands still is a land where promise and perhaps must coexist. Audacious faith does not eliminate doubt and fear. It eclipses their power one decision at a time. You know God’’s will by doing God’’s will.

Jonathan and his armor bearer ended up saving the day in a spectacular way. Their act of audacious faith tilted the fate of an entire nation.

Act on your “perhaps”, and see what God will do in your world.

A STUDY OF PSALM 91 – 5

“The Lord says, “I will rescue those who love me. I will protect those who trust in my name. When they call on me, I will answer; I will be with them in trouble. I will rescue and honor them. I will reward them with a long life and give them my salvation.””

‭‭Psalms‬ ‭91:14-16‬ ‭NLT‬‬

What promises! Why do we worry? Why do we fret? God has promised to rescue, protect, answer, be with, honor and reward us! Glory! Alleluia!

A STUDY OF PSALM 91 – 4

“If you make the Lord your refuge, if you make the Most High your shelter, no evil will conquer you; no plague will come near your home. For he will order his angels to protect you wherever you go. They will hold you up with their hands so you won’t even hurt your foot on a stone. You will trample upon lions and cobras; you will crush fierce lions and serpents under your feet!”

‭‭Psalms‬ ‭91:9-13‬ ‭NLT‬‬

The key point here is ‘If you make’, the decision to ha e God as our protector, Defence, strength, is ours to make. We have to choose Him above all, we have to continue to choose Him.

When we choose God, not only does God protect us, but he gives us the power to destroy the forces that come against us. Tread on the lion and the cobra. Trample on the great lion and the serpent. Tread and trample are action words—now we are taking the fight to our enemies. (Remember, our enemies are spiritual forces, not the people we see who may be persecuting us.) Because God is with us and his angels are protecting us, even the “gates of hell” will not prevail against us. The size of our enemy doesn’t matter, because our victory comes through the power and authority of  the Most High God.

We win because He is, not because we are!

A STUDY OF PSALM 91 – 3

“Do not be afraid of the terrors of the night, nor the arrow that flies in the day. Do not dread the disease that stalks in darkness, nor the disaster that strikes at midday. Though a thousand fall at your side, though ten thousand are dying around you, these evils will not touch you. Just open your eyes, and see how the wicked are punished.”

‭‭Psalms‬ ‭91:5-8‬ ‭NLT‬‬

God will protect us and deliver us from every attack.  His deliverance may mean that we still face trials, but Jesus said: “Do not be afraid of those who kill the body but cannot kill the soul.” (Matt. 10:28). When God protects us—his children—we know that we are safe.  Even if we suffer persecution and physical death, nothing can snatch us out of God’s powerful and loving hands.

When enemies directly attack us we can remain at peace, knowing that God himself is our shield and our fortress. Remember that we don’t have to act—you will only observe with your eyes and see the punishment of the wicked.” God will act on your behalf.  God will defend his children. “Stand still, and see the salvation of the Lord, which he will accomplish for you today. (Exodus 14:13). We just need to declare His victory! His supremacy!

Open your eyes and see God at work! He has never and will never fail! Victory is assured

STUDY OF PSALM 91 – 2

“For he will rescue you from every trap and protect you from deadly disease. He will cover you with his feathers. He will shelter you with his wings. His faithful promises are your armor and protection.”

‭‭Psalms‬ ‭91:3-4‬ ‭NLT‬‬

The first thing that comes to mind is that God protects! He knows where the traps are, He knows what brings about diseases and He is willing and able to protect His own from them all without fail. God’s protection is pictured like a mother bird sheltering its baby. The baby is covered by her wing, feels her feathers, hears her heartbeat. Who can be afraid? When we have placed ourselves under God’s protection we have the same feeling of peace as this baby bird. He shelters us and we feel his presence. What can harm us? We must all place ourselves and our situation into God’s hands and trust in His ability to keep us safe. He will replace our fears with his perfect love. And then the peace of God, which surpasses our human understanding, will keep your heart and your mind through faith in Christ Jesus (Phil. 4:7).

RUN TO GOD TODAY!

THE MATCH IS FIXED! WE WIN!

My husband loves tennis and is an ardent Nadal fan, he watches every match Nadal plays like a hundred times over (except the ones Nadal lost 😉) I often wonder how he enjoys it so much watching the same match over and over even though he already knows how it ends. One day while grudgingly watching one of such matches with him, I had an ‘AHA’ moment. I realized that right from the beginning, I knew the outcome of the match, I had seen the result on the news previously, Nadal won! Knowing Nadal already won the match changed the entire experience of watching the match.

As I watched the match unfold, there were times Nadal was losing. I started thinking to myself, Oh, no! He is falling behind! He won’t be able to come back. This isn’t going to end well.

Then I would come to my senses and realize, Wait! The end is already decided. Victory is certain. He already won!

When his opposition would score, it wasn’t pleasant to watch, but I could smile because I knew the final outcome.

Then it hit me, you and I are living lives full of ups and downs. There are days that seem like a victory, and other days we feel defeated. On the hard days it’s easy to look around and become discouraged. It’s easy to feel like things are never going to work out.

I want you to be reassured with the truth of God’s eternal promises. The end of the story is already written, and we win! The match is fixed in our favour! We can’t lose! No matter how it looks at the moment, no matter how we feel right now, WE ARE MORE THAN CONQUERORS! WE WIN!
